By utilizing the relationship between the neuromusculoskeletal system and the rest of the body, it restores functionality and removes barriers to motion and healing.
OMM has many benefits for doctors when treating patients, and having it as part of their repertoire gives doctors a non-invasive and medication-free treatment option for many types of joint and muscle pain.
It can be administered safely in combination with other medical treatments to improve outcomes. If you are a borderline applicant, meaning you have somewhere between a 3. Once again, you would be competitive applicant for DO schools but your chances at MD schools would be slim. Applying to both also requires an excess amount of work—learning how to apply using two different systems and making sure you fulfill the pre-requisites for both.
There is a lot of overlap in terms of pre-requisites, but there are some small differences that you need to be aware of extra classes or letters of references. If you apply to both, you have to be okay with going to a DO school if that is the only school you are accepted to. Unfortunately there is no way around this. There will always be people who feel the DO is inferior to the MD. This comparison cannot be legitimately validated or rejected, but people will compare nonetheless.
You must also consider whether or not you will consider yourself lesser than MDs. If you become a DO, you will need to be comfortable in your shoes and practice confidently rather than always feeling not as good as the MD next door. Although DOs and MDs practice medicine in a similar way, they have or at least are supposed to have fundamental differences. As of now, the DO and MD residencies are separated. Certification of both allopathic and osteopathic residencies will soon be merging into a single medical education accreditation system.
The point of the merger is to create one accreditation system to ensure a consistent method of evaluating residency programs and expand the training opportunities for both DOs and MDs.
Some programs may not meet the requirements however the merger is designed to improve the quality and requirements of medical education for all physician graduates.
There are many programs that accept both but following the merger all programs should accept both. While DO students taking the COMLEX will be eligible for all programs, the increased competition due to the elimination of some programs may make the USMLE an important addition to the residency application process for osteopathic graduates.
